Stack of sticky notes.

Closed Card Sort

Like the open card sort, this exercise will help you think about the connections between the different items in your content inventory by using two category sets to sort the items in your content inventory.

  • Find your sticky notes from your Open Card Sort.
  • Pick 2 skills from this list, 1 that matches the month of birth of a parent or sibling and 1 of your own choosing.
  • Pick 2 dispositions from this list, 1 that matches the month of birth of a parent or sibling and 1 of your own choosing.
  • Organize your sticky notes into the 2 skills and 2 dispositions. Take a picture of your results.
  • Submit the results of your card sort through the exercise upload.

I think some of the card sorts, particularly when you are forced into more externally-defined topics, were extremely useful. It pushed me to think about fractions of my artifacts that could fall under different, broader, and more subjective categories. I think it would be incredibly good prep for an interview for a liberal arts student.

Card sorts; I was challenged to think about my experiences in different ways to identify how differently they are interconnected.

The post it notes were the most useful. It really allowed me to visualize my experiences and grouping them into different categories multiple times allowed me to understand myself more.

I really liked the post-it classes. I thought they helped to organize my thoughts and categorize them.

When we mapped out our artifacts and organized them into categories. It was helpful to visually see all of your accomplishments that you might not have thought were “resume worthy” before.

[The] closed card sort … made me think about what categories my content fit into and editing workshops because they allowed me to receive feedback form my classmates.
